BRIGHTCOVE

Client Situation

Jeremy Allaire, entrepreneur-in-residence at the venture capital firm General Catalyst, needed 10,000 square feet for his newly launched company, Brightcove. Jeremy had previously held senior management positions with technology companies Allaire and Macromedia, and understood the impact of real estate decisions on company culture. Jeremy hired Columbia Group to help him define the space need, identify sites and negotiate the business terms of the lease.

Action Taken

Columbia Group quickly surveyed relevant sites in the market, made recommendations, organized tours, and met Brightcove’s tight schedule by anticipating and managing all lead-time decision items. Through clearly defined goals and strong communication between broker and senior management, Brightcove was able to make informed decisions and move quickly and decisively in its choice.

Outcome

Although initially delivering a short-term space through procurement of a below-market sublease, Columbia Group positioned Brightcove within a building and at a location that could provide long-term opportunities and the flexibility to expand. For the past six years, through a series of new subleases, direct leases and amendments, the company has added just-in-time space to accommodate growth at its headquarters location, has avoided the organizational disturbance caused by frequent moves, and has instead focused its energies on building its business.
